Monastery Ministries Collage

The ministries of the Sisters of St. Scholastica grew from the needs of the greater community in which we live. In the 19th and 20th centuries, this meant ministries in education and health care, and so they founded Catholic elementary and high schools, The College of St. Scholastica, St. Mary’s Medical Center, and the various entities of the Benedictine Health System.

Today, laypeople lead and staff the schools and health care centers we founded. Our primary role there is in sponsorship that fosters their Catholic Benedictine identity and in service on their governing Boards. While these ministries remain important, we also are responding to new needs of the 21st century. As American culture grows more secular and capitalistic, its hunger for true spirituality and meaning grows.
And some of us have skills and talents which we use for the Community and for the whole world.
Many of these ministries are highlighted in the following Ministries sections:
“Before all, and above all, attention shall be paid to the care of the sick, so that they shall be served as if they were Christ Himself.”
–St. Benedict of Nursia, The Rule of Saint Benedict
