My Personal Christological Creed

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”  Matthew 16:13-15

Have you ever wondered how you would answer Jesus’ question? Would you have declared, like Peter did, that Jesus was the Messiah, the Son of God? Or would you answer him by reciting the Apostles Creed or the Nicene Creed?

Sometime back, I was asked to write my own personal Christological creed. I remember it being a good exercise. So, I thought I’d try it again.

Jesus, I believe that You love me today just as You always have.

I believe that You are.

I believe that You are my Lord, my Life, and my Love.

I believe that You are fully God, always have been and always will be.

I believe that You are the expression of God, of God’s love, of God’s longing to be in relationship with me.

I believe that You are the essence of God’s and the wonderment of humanity.

I believe that You lowered Yourself, still as God, becoming human, born of Mary.

I believe that You grew and learned as a human, experiencing all that we are without losing the glory of Your Godhead.

I believe that You lived and worked and loved as a human being to show me how to do the same.

I believe that You are the perfect humble servant leader, the perfect teacher, preacher and healer.

I believe that You show God’s love and dream for humanity.

I believe that You are my example and inspiration.

I believe that You are always with me even when I don’t give You the time of day.

I believe that You love me constantly and continuously and wait for me to love You.

I believe that it pleases You to know that I want so bad to be like You in love and service.

I believe that it pains You to see me do wrong to myself and to others.

I believe that it saddens You when I waste moments that could be spent loving You, praising the Father and living in the Spirit.

I believe that it is Your strength, Your love, and Your forgiveness that allow me to try again and again to do right by You and my fellow humans.

I believe that You lived so that I may live. I believe that You died so that I may live. I believe that You rose so that I may live.

I believe that You are Victor.

I believe that You reign at the right hand of God the Father.

I believe that I am intimately tied to You and that You will never abandon me.

I believe that Your abiding presence is everywhere and with everyone.

I believe that You are found body, blood, soul and divinity in the Eucharist.

I believe that You are fully alive and present with us and to us in the Blessed Sacrament.

I believe that You are the fulfillment of God’s promises.

I believe that You are the Path to Everlasting Life.
