The Arts

St. Benedict had two admonitions for the artists of the community: Be neither proud nor avaricious, and work so that "in all things God may be glorified." Our efforts in this ministry have produced countless works: photographs, carvings, stained glass, paintings, icons, literature, music and much more, each creative work offering a means to discover beauty, which is the reflection of God.

These are two of the many icons written by
Sister Mary Charles McGough.

Sister Gretchen Johnston plays a number of musical instruments as well as the organ.

"Creating art in any form is a way to bring harmony, balance, and healing into a world that is often chaotic and dissonant. As a monastic woman artist, I try each day to accept this awesome two-fold challenge - to help save the world a bit through beauty and to glorify God through the work of my heart and hands."

vision and inspiration live on through her art.
