Health Care

St. Benedict charges us to take care of the sick as though they were Christ, saying that this work “must rank above and before all else.” The founding of our Community in Duluth responded to St. Benedict’s mandate to care for the sick and has been one of our primary ministries ever since. This ministry has expanded over the years to include the sponsorship of many health-care facilities in eight states. In the ministry of health care the Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery sponsor the Benedictine Health System and the Catholic Hospitals within Essentia Health System.
The Catholic Facilities of Essentia Health continue Jesus’ mission of healing. These health-care centers are mindful of Benedict’s assertion to care for the sick and are therefore called to make a healthy difference in people’s lives.
The Benedictine Health System (BHS), a mission-based, nonprofit health system headquartered in Duluth, Minnesota, is one of the largest Catholic senior care organizations in the country with more than 40 senior care communities in seven states: Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Missouri, South Dakota, Illinois, and Kansas. The system provides complete long-term care services for aging adults, including independent housing, assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care, and short-term and outpatient rehabilitation services. The mission of BHS is to witness to God’s love by providing compassionate, quality care with special concern for the underserved and those in need. |
"As a nurse educator and board member I am privileged to touch the lives of patients both on a personal and a policy making level. My greatest joy comes for the "aha" moments of students in their clinical experiences and the insights they learn about themselves and African culture as they participate in the service learning trip to Tanzania." -- Sister Beverly Raway, Associate Professor, Nursing, Coordinator-The Tanzanian Experience, The College of St. Scholastica; Board Member of the Benedictine Health System. |
