Sister Jeanne Ann Weber – The Solemnity of Pentecost

This icon of Pentecost written by +Sister Mary Charles McGough, O.S.B. of our Community greets us as we enter the Chapel for Solemn Evening Prayer on Saturday.

It depicts this very significant feast in which the Holy Spirit descends upon Mary, the Apostles, and other followers of Christ. Pentecost is sometimes described as the Birthday of the Church. Those gathered in the upper room were empowered to speak and witness for Christ through the grace and gifts of the Holy Spirit. We too are renewed and challenged by the graces of this celebration.

At the 11:00 a.m. Sunday Eucharist we hear: The love of God has been poured into our hearts through the Spirit of God dwelling within us, alleluia. (Alternative Entrance Antiphon.)

The cantor, schola, and assembly sing the responsorial psalm which is truly a heart-felt prayer: Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.

In the Gospel we hear Jesus saying to each of us: The Spirit of Truth will guide you to all truth. Let us pray for open and courageous minds and hearts to not only hear, but to act upon God’s Word with faith, joy, and power.
